France to Consider Coordinating with Cambodia to Facilitate Thai-Cambodian Bilateral Talks

In her telephone discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron on 27 June 2025, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said Thailand hopes that France, as a close international partner, will play a role in supporting an atmosphere favorable to continued bilateral talks between Thailand and Cambodia on the border situation.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Thailand continued to support the operations of the Thailand-Cambodia Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), which held a meeting recently in Phnom Penh for discussions on the Thailand-Cambodia border situation.

She reaffirmed Thailand’s strong commitment to finding peaceful solutions, based on mutual respect and good faith and the principles of international law. Thailand is of the view that existing bilateral mechanisms are the most effective tools to resolve disputes between Thailand and Cambodia.

In this regard, Government Spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub stated that the French President acknowledged Thailand’s intention and would consider coordinating with Cambodia to facilitate Thai-Cambodian talks on border disputes.

Both Prime Minister Paetongtarn and the French President shared the belief that the current uncertain political and economic situation called for increased cooperation, particularly in trade and investment. France intends to expand its cooperation with Thailand, especially in security matters and space technology.

Concerning ASEAN, the Prime Minister attaches importance to the central role of ASEAN in addressing transnational crime, saying that Thailand has been implementing proactive measures to tackle transnational crime, especially call center scams and cybercrime.

She pointed out that Thailand is ready to cooperate closely with neighboring countries and international partners, including France, in fighting transnational crime. In this connection, France expressed its support for the Prime Minister in the efforts against transnational crime.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed her intention to elevate Thai-French relations to a strategic partnership as soon as possible and welcomed the official visit to Thailand by President Macron next year during his participation in the summit of “Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie” in Cambodia.

The French President also invited the Prime Minister to pay an official visit to France and to participate in the Paris Peace Forum in France, as well.
