U.S. Sets New Reciprocal Tariff Rate of 19 Percent on Thai Goods

The U.S. administration has decided to impose a 19 percent reciprocal tariff on imports of Thai goods to the U.S. market, down from the previous 36 percent, and effective on 1 August 2025.

Government Spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub stated that the new rate would bring Thailand’s tariff level closer to that of other countries in this region, such as Vietnam, the Philippines, and Japan. This would help enable Thailand to maintain its export competitiveness in the U.S. market.

He said that the breakthrough deal with the United States is regarded as successful negotiations by “Team Thailand” in securing a win-win outcome that maintains Thailand’s export base and stabilizes the country’s economy in the long run. This success also reflects Thailand’s potential in the global market amidst changes in international trade policies.

Meanwhile, Mr. Jirayu said that Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai called a special Cabinet meeting on 1 August after Thailand had been informed by the United States about the reciprocal tariff reduction.
