A U.S. congressional delegation met Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai at Government House in Bangkok on 25 August 2025 during their visit to Thailand, as part of the Congressional Study Program on Thailand 2025.
The U.S. congressional delegation comprises Representatives Beth Van Duyne and Richard McCormick from the Republican Party and Representatives Terri Sewell and Suhas Subramanyam from the Democratic Party. Also joining the meeting were Deputy Minister of Defense Gen. Nattaphon Narkphanit, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Russ Jalichandra, Secretary-General of the National Security Council Chatchai Bangchuad, and Thai Ambassador to the United States Suriya Chindawongse.
On this occasion, both sides discussed bilateral relations and regional security. Mr. Phumtham stressed that the Thai government attached importance to strengthening the Thai-U.S. strategic partnership. Both countries have great potential for expanding cooperation, especially in the digital economy and energy development.
He thanked the United States for supporting the ceasefire declaration between Thailand and Cambodia, saying that Thailand aims to resolve the Thai-Cambodian border situation through peaceful means. Thailand and Cambodia will attend the upcoming General Border Committee (GBC) meeting on 10 September. During the previous GBC meeting, the United States also served as an observer. The Acting Prime Minister believed that support by the United States and ASEAN would help improve the situation.
The U.S. congressional delegation will travel to Ubon Ratchathani Province on 26 August to observe the border situation and get first-hand information. Cambodia was continuing to use landmines in Thai territory despite the ceasefire, resulting in injuries to Thai soldiers. Cambodia’s actions are considered violations of Thailand’s sovereignty, international humanitarian law, and the Ottawa Convention.
Thailand and the United States are joining the annual Chiefs of Defense Conference on 26-28 August 2025 in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. The event is being jointly hosted by the United States Indo-Pacific Command and Royal Thai Armed Forces.
