Special Cabinet Meeting Approves Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai as Acting Prime Minister

A special Cabinet meeting was held on 30 August 2025, after the Constitutional Court had terminated the premiership of Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra. The meeting approved the appointment of Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai as acting prime minister.

Speaking after the Cabinet meeting, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Chousak Sirinil explained that, following the court’s ruling, the Cabinet is now functioning in a caretaker capacity until a new cabinet is formed.

He said that the Cabinet meeting approved the appointment of Mr. Prommin Lertsuridej as Secretary-General to the Prime Minister, effective on 30 August. The Cabinet also approved a framework for its operations during this transitional period.

In this regard, any decisions on new policies that would bind the next administration should not be considered, while urgent matters may proceed on a case-by-case basis. All political office holders appointed by the Prime Minister, such as vice ministers and Thailand’s trade representatives, are required to vacate their posts. If any are to be allowed to continue their work, they must be reappointed in accordance with strict legal procedures.

Mr. Chousak said that the meeting also discussed legislation already approved by the Cabinet and being scrutinized by the Council of State. The legislation must be reconsidered by the new cabinet, as well. In term of policy, the issue may bind the next government, therefore, the meeting decided to suspend it for now.
