The Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Persons Holding Political Positions has ordered former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to serve one year in prison concerning the "14th floor case."
The court ruling was issued on 9 September 2025, as the court found that he had not adequately served a jail sentence from a past conviction.
Mr. Thaksin returned to Thailand on his private jet on 22 August 2023 after about 15 years in self-exile abroad. Then he was promptly tried, and he was sentenced to eight years in prison because of his convictions for abuse of power and conflicts of interest during his time in office.
Mr. Thaksin had spent only hours in a jail cell before he was moved to a private room on the 14th floor of the Police General Hospital, citing a medical emergency as the reason. He remained there until he was granted parole in early 2024. During his stay in the hospital, a royal pardon was granted, reducing his imprisonment of eight years to only one year.
The Medical Council of Thailand later concluded that Mr. Thaksin’s condition was not critical, against previous medical reports. Investigations made by the Supreme Court also indicated that the transfer of Mr. Thaksin to the Police General Hospital for treatment outside prison was unlawful. The court, therefore, has ordered him to serve a one-year prison sentence.
