Energy Minister Emphasizes Solar Energy Projects to Reduce Costs and Generate Investments

Minister of Energy Auttapol Rerkpiboon has cited the acceleration of community solar projects as one of his major policies to reduce energy costs for the people’s sector and help stimulate the Thai economy through investments in electricity generation.

Mr.  Auttapol, accompanied by executives of the Ministry of Energy, on 8 October 2025 gave a press briefing on the Government’s energy policies, under the “Quick Big Win” framework and with the efforts to move Thailand toward becoming a low-carbon society.

He said that the installation of solar water pumps for agriculture would be given a boost, covering more than 700,000 rai (about 280,000 acres) of farmland across the country. This project is expected to lead to investments totaling 12.5 billion baht, generate 87.5 megawatts of electricity from renewable energy, and reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 0.6 million tons.

Regarding the community solar farm project, with a production target of 1,500 megawatts, it is expected to stimulate the economy through investments of more than 30 billion baht and create over 1,600 jobs. The project will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 0.8 million tons annually. The purchasing of electricity is scheduled to begin in November 2025.

The Government will also offer personal income tax deduction as an incentive for individuals who install solar panels on their homes. It is expected that 90,000 households will join this scheme, which will stimulate the economy through investments of more than 20.25 billion baht. The project is likely to reduce the consumption of 585 million units of electricity a year and carbon dioxide emissions by 280,000 tons annually.

Moreover, the floating solar electricity generation project will be carried out in three major dams of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), with a combined capacity of 1,638 megawatts. They include Bhumibol, Vajiralongkorn, and Srinagarind dams. This project has a low production cost and will lead to an investment of over 53 billion baht and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of over 0.8 million tons annually.

The Ministry of Energy is also accelerating the "Direct Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)" project, targeting 2,000 megawatts. The project is expected to be presented to the Committee on Energy Policy Administration by November 2025, and it will generate an investment of 65 billion baht. This will also enhance Thailand’s competitiveness and accommodate its future industries.
