Thailand Moving toward Becoming Global Halal Food Hub

The Ministry of Commerce is proceeding with its plan to strengthen Thailand’s food security and move the country toward becoming a global halal food hub.

Minister of Commerce Suphajee Suthumpun on 11 December 2025 held talks with Mr. Yousef Hassan Khalawi, Secretary General of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Development (ICCD), for more cooperation in trade, investment, and the halal industry between Thailand and members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Minister Suphajee told the ICCD Secretary General that Thailand attached importance to promoting economic cooperation with almost 60 Muslim nations, especially those in the Middle East, which are Thailand’s major markets and a strategic point linking global value chains.

She explained that, as one of the world’s important food manufacturers, with great potential for producing halal food of high quality, Thailand was ready to serve as a “food security hub” for OIC countries. Today, Thailand has more than 200,000 halal items, certified by the Central Islamic Council of Thailand.

From January to October 2025, Thailand exported halal food products valued at 4,872 million US dollars to OIC members. The global Muslim population is now over two billion, and the global halal food market is valued at about 1.4 trillion dollars.

Minister Suphajee stated that Thailand still had vast opportunities for halal exports to the world market. Major Thai halal exports include rice, sugar, canned seafood, vegetable oil, tapioca products, frozen chicken, fresh and processed fruits, and various instant food products.

Minister Suphajee also said that the Ministry of Commerce was preparing to further develop the “Data-Driven Policy” system, with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to analyze the global trade situation and study the demand for Thai agricultural products in major foreign markets.

This system will provide complete and updated information to help in policy decision-making at all levels and enhance Thailand’s competitiveness in the world market.
