Thai Voters Overseas Invited to Cast Their Ballots for General Election and Constitutional Referendum

The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) has invited eligible Thai voters overseas to cast their ballots for the general election and the constitutional referendum between 19 and 30 January 2026.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Department of Consular Affairs, Thai embassies, and consulates-general worldwide, as well as the Thailand Trade and Economic Office, has prepared venues and personnel to facilitate overseas voting in accordance with the methods eligible voters registered for – through polling stations, mobile polling units, or mailing services.

After overseas election ballots are sent back to Thailand, the ECT, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand Post, and the Royal Thai Police will work together to deliver them to constituency election committees across 400 constituencies, based on each voter’s registered constituency, for counting on 8 February 2026.

Overseas referendum ballots will be counted abroad at Thai embassies and consulates-general, or other designated venues. Counting will begin once voting closes according to Thailand time, from 17.00 hr on 8 February, and it must be completed within 48 hours.

The Thai embassies and consulates-general opened registration for the general election between 20 December 2025 and 5 January 2026, and for the constitutional referendum between 3 and 5 January 2026, for overseas voters.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, around 139,535 overseas voters registered for the general election, which is an increase of more than 21 percent from the last general election, while about 95,000 voters registered for the referendum. The top five countries in terms of the number of Thai nationals and communities that are registered are Australia, the U.S., Japan, Germany, and the U.K.

This will be the first time that the general election and the referendum are conducted simultaneously. The overseas voting takes place ahead of the general election in the Kingdom, scheduled for 8 February, following the dissolution of the House of Representatives that took effect on 12 December 2025.
