The Ministry of Culture is preparing to organize the celebration for the “244th Anniversary of the Foundation of Rattanakosin” from 22 to 26 April 2026 in three areas, namely the Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park, the National Museum Bangkok, and Wat Prayurawongsawas (known colloquially as Wat Prayoon).
Permanent Secretary for Culture Prasop Riangngoen said that the upcoming event is meant to commemorate the 244th anniversary of the founding of the Rattanakosin City, and to recall the gracious kindness of King Rama I, who established Rattanakosin, or Bangkok, as the capital of Thailand, on 21 April 1782.
It is also intended to honor all Chakri kings, as they have brought stability and prosperity to the country throughout the period, with their ingenuity and far-sighted vision. King Rama I was also the founder of the Royal House of Chakri, of which the present monarch, His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua, is the 10th king.
The celebration is held each year as an annual event. This year, it will focus on the theme “Living Rattanakosin” in the following three locations:
1. Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park: The program includes an outdoor multimedia exhibition and interactive multimedia installations to celebrate the 244th anniversary of Rattanakosin, and a market for cultural products.
At the cultural platform, visitors may explore Thai heritage, with demonstrations of traditional Thai food and desserts and contemporary workshops. There will be many cultural shows, such as khon masked drama, lakhon nok drama, folk performances, contemporary performances, and music.
2. National Museum Bangkok: The program “Rattanakosin Royal Night” will be arranged, offering a visit to the Grand Palace and the National Museum Bangkok at night-time. Other activities include outdoor film screenings, cultural shows, and sale of Thai food and products, as well as demonstrations of traditional Thai massage, Thai food and desserts, and academic discussions.
3. Wat Prayoon: This area will feature the event “Khlong San – Kudi Chin Cultural Walk,” offering a chance for visitors to walk inside the Khlong San and Kudi Chin communities. The event also includes demonstrations and sale of cultural products, contests of food of three faiths, cultural shows, and mahachat preaching as a tribute to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother.
Both Thai and international tourists are invited to join the various activities and experience Thai cultural heritage at this interesting event.
