Thailand Offers to Help Support Efforts to Advance Peace Process in Myanmar

As a close neighbor of Myanmar, Thailand has offered to help support efforts to advance the peace process in Myanmar, which will benefit the people of both countries and the ASEAN region.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow on 18 February 2026 held an informal discussion with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar U Than Swe in Phuket Province during the latter’s visit to Thailand.

According to a report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both sides exchanged views in an open and constructive manner. They reaffirmed the close relations between Thailand and Myanmar as neighboring countries with broad-based cooperation, particularly in the areas of the economy and border security, with a view to promoting peace and the well-being of the peoples of both countries. 

They agreed to enhance economic cooperation, revive border trade, consider further facilitating trade and investment, including support for the Thai private sector in Myanmar.

In addition, both sides will increase cooperation between armed forces and security agencies to prevent and address security challenges along the border, especially online scams and narcotic drugs. They also discussed further collaboration to address transboundary air and water pollution.

The Thai and Myanmar foreign ministers exchanged views on the way forward to promote calibrated re-engagement between ASEAN and Myanmar, with Thailand helping as a bridge, while continuing to encourage positive developments in Myanmar taking into account the completion of the elections in Myanmar and the upcoming formation of the new Myanmar government.
