Surin Governor Chamroen Waenphet confirmed that the fire situation had been contained, following an explosion at the Border Patrol Police (BPP) Unit 21 armory in Mueang District, Surin Province.
In a press conference, held on 24 February 2026 at 21.15 hr, the Governor reported that the explosion occurred on 24 February at about 19.30 hr in an ammunition depot containing mortar shells and Rocket-Propelled Grenades.
The blast generated significant shockwaves and dispersed shrapnel in the immediate area. Security personnel quickly alerted and evacuated nearby residents and staff. The incident injured one BPP officer, who was immediately sent to the Fort Weerawatyothin Hospital in Surin.
The fire initially spread to a small-arms ammunition storage building, causing intermittent secondary detonations. The intensity of these blasts has since decreased. All residents in nearby housing units have been evacuated to a designated safe zone.
Governor Chamroen noted that the armory is surrounded by a six-meter-high earthen embankment and is located a significant distance from local communities, which helped prevent further damage.
A task force of 10 fire engines, supported by chemical foam trucks and water tankers, is stationed at the site for overnight surveillance. Additional support units have been deployed to the perimeter of nearby residential areas.
Authorities have suspended overnight entry into the immediate blast zone for safety reasons. As the fire has been contained, security and explosive ordnance disposal units will conduct a thorough forensic inspection of the site on the morning of 25 February.
