Thailand Seeks Clarification from Iran After Thai-Flagged Cargo Ship Was Hit in the Strait of Hormuz

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand has invited Mr. Nassereddin Heidari, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Thailand, to seek clarification after a Thai-flagged cargo ship was hit in the Strait of Hormuz.

Mrs. Sirilak Niyom, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, on 12 March 2026 had a discussion with the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran. She raised concerns regarding the incident involving the Thai-flagged cargo ship “Mayuree Naree,” which was hit and damaged while sailing in the Strait of Hormuz after departing from Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates, affecting 23 Thai crew members on board.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary conveyed Thailand’s strongest protest over the incident and requested that the Iranian authorities issue a statement of apology and clarify the facts surrounding the incident, expressing the hope that such an incident would not happen again. The Ambassador of Iran expressed his condolences and gave assurances to promptly convey Thailand’s protest to the capital.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary also expressed concern over the escalation of the situation in the region and called on all parties to exercise the utmost restraint, return to diplomatic dialogue, and ensure the safety of civilians in the region.

She conveyed appreciation to the Government of Iran for its facilitation of the successful evacuation of Thai nationals from Iran on 7 and 10 March 2026. The Thai side also requested that the Iranian authorities continue to ensure the safety of Thai students who remain in Iran.
