Bhumjaithai Party Leader Anutin Charnvirakul Re-elected Prime Minister of Thailand

Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Bhumjaithai Party Leader, was re-elected the prime minister of Thailand with majority support, during a session of the House of Representatives on 19 March 2026, following the general election on 8 February.

Mr. Anutin secured 293 votes, defeating People’s Party Leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, who received 119 votes, while 86 members of the House of Representatives abstained from voting.

In his address, he assured members of parliament that he would work to the best of his ability with all representatives of the people for the benefit of the country and the people. He would adopt His Majesty the King’s speech delivered at the opening of Parliament on 14 March, when His Majesty urged members of parliament to uphold righteousness and the public interest as the highest goal.

Mr. Anutin has been the prime minister since September 2025 after winning a parliamentary vote to become Thailand's 32nd prime minister. The vote was held after former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, from the Pheu Thai Party, had been dismissed from office by the Constitutional Court for an ethical breach over her private conversation with Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate of Cambodia.

Born in Bangkok on 13 September 1966, Mr. Anutin is the eldest son of Mr. Chavarat Charnvirakul, former Minister of Interior and founder of Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction. He completed his secondary education at Assumption College in Bangkok and received a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Hofstra University in New York. He also earned a Mini MBA from the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Thammasat University, in 1990.

Mr. Anutin has held several ministerial positions, including deputy minister of public health, deputy minister of commerce, deputy prime minister and minister of public health, and deputy prime minister and minister of interior.

After the 8 February 2026 general election, Bhumjaithai Party won 193 seats, making it the largest party in the 500-seat House of Representatives. The new government, led by Mr. Anutin, will be a coalition, comprising several parties.
