Highly Successful Performance of Songkran Festival 2026

The Songkran Festival 2026 has achieved great success and played a vital role in driving Thailand’s economy and tourism, as well as promoting a favorable image of the country and making its “soft power” better known worldwide.

Songkran in Thailand was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO on 6 December 2023. The public and private sectors and local communities joined hands in organizing various activities to celebrate Songkran, traditional Thai New Year festival, nationwide between 11 and 15 April 2026. 

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, during this period, international tourist arrivals were projected at 500,000, a 4 percent increase year-on-year, generating around 8.1 billion baht in revenue. Domestic tourism was expected to reach 5.96 million trips, a 7 percent increase, contributing about 22.25 billion baht. The combined domestic and international tourism was likely to generate more than 30.35 billion baht in tourism revenue, marking a 6 percent increase over the same period last year.

Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek stated that, 42 foreign embassies in Thailand had created videos to send greetings and best wishes to the Thai people on the occasion of Songkran this year. Leading international media outlets, such as Associated Press, Reuters, Euronews, and Xinhua, have also reported news and information on Songkran, which was described as one of the most dynamic and lively festivals in the world. 

The Straits Times reported that Thailand had imposed “10 security measures” for water play during its Songkran festival, which reflected the country’s commitment to maintaining international standards in event management and preserving the good image of the festival. The public was requested to celebrate politely and strictly comply with the law to make Songkran 2026 a safe festival.

Meanwhile, Minister of Culture Sabeeda Thaised stated that the Songkran festival has made Thailand a top global festival destination. Big 7 Travel, an online media platform based in the United Kingdom, ranked Thailand the No. 1 destination to visit in April 2026, driven by the excitement of the Songkran water festival.  

She said that the success of organizing the Songkran festival demonstrates the value and significance of Thai culture, which offers unique experiences bringing happiness, warmth. and friendship to people from all over the world. 

Although the high point of Songkran has passed, celebrations still continue in many parts of the country, such as Chon Buri, Samut Prakan, Uthai Thani, and Nan. These provinces are ready to welcome all visitors to celebrate the Kingdom’s traditional New Year a little longer.
