Thailand and Vietnam have expressed their intention to enhance all dimensions of cooperation for the benefits of their people and the promotion of peace, prosperity, and stability in the region.
Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul on 28 May 2026 held a plenary meeting with Mr. To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam at Government House in Bangkok. Mr. To Lam and his spouse, Madam Ngo Phuong Ly, paid an official visit to Thailand on 27-28 May, as guests of the Government.
Both leaders witnessed the exchange of the following four cooperation documents:
1. Plan of Action on Implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Thailand and Viet Nam (2026-2031);
2. Exchange of Diplomatic Notes between the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam confirming that the two ministries are the lead agencies responsible for the implementation and coordination of cooperation under the Agreement between the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Government of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam on Cooperation on Science, Technology and Innovation;
3. Memorandum of Understanding on the Collaboration for the Development of MRO Center at U-Tapao International Airport;
4. Memorandum of Understanding between the Academy of Public Administration and Governance, Vietnam and Khon Kaen University.
At the plenary session, Thailand and Vietnam discussed joint cooperation in suppressing transnational crimes, especially online scams, and tackling illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Concerning economic cooperation, both sides set a target of achieving 25 billion US dollars in bilateral trade as soon as possible, while promoting investment between them on a continual basis. They also agreed to step up cooperation in science, technology, and innovation.
The two leaders jointly presided over the launch ceremony of the official logo commemorating the 50th anniversary of Thailand-Vietnam diplomatic relations, before delivering a joint press statement at Santi Maitri Building. The Vietnamese President also extended an invitation for Prime Minister Anutin to visit Vietnam.
In the afternoon on the same day, Prime Minister Anutin and Mr. To Lam jointly presided over the opening of the Thailand–Vietnam Business Forum 2026 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Bangkok, under the theme “Growing Together: Celebrating 50 Years of Thailand–Viet Nam Relations.” At the forum, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Thapanee Kiatphaibool signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Vietnam Airlines to promote tourism cooperation and strengthen air connectivity between the two countries.
In the evening, the Prime Minister hosted a dinner reception in honor of Mr. To Lam and his spouse at Santi Maitri Building, Government House, with cultural and music performances celebrating the strong and enduring ties between the two countries.
Thailand was the first ASEAN country officially visited by Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary To Lam after assuming office as President of Vietnam. President To Lam was also the first foreign leader to make an official visit to Thailand under the current administration, led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
