Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul welcomed Mr. Lawrence Wong, Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore, who, upon the Thai Prime Minister’s invitation, paid a visit to Thailand to attend the 5th Thailand-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat on 2 September 2026 in Bangkok.

Prime Minister Anutin delivered remarks at the Joint Press Conference following the 5th Thailand-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat, as follows:

“Prime Minister Wong and I had just concluded a very productive 5th Leaders’ Retreat, our first in eleven years. Its resumption is very timely, as Singapore and Thailand will chair ASEAN over the next two years. Together, we have an important responsibility to navigate ASEAN through global challenges and make ASEAN even stronger.

“Today we welcome the Joint Statement on the Thailand–Singapore Forward-Looking Strategic Partnership, which will set the future direction of our relations and sends a strong message of our shared commitment.

“We also welcome the signing of the MOU on social development cooperation and agreed to work on four additional agreements covering digital economy, transnational crime, food security, and supply chain resilience.

“Our discussion focused on four pillars.

“First, a green and sustainable partnership.

“Recent disruptions to global food and energy supplies have shown that we must strengthen our resilience, while remaining open and connected.

“On energy security, we agreed to deepen cooperation on clean and low-carbon energy, build on the Lao PDR, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore power integration project as a step towards the ASEAN Power Grid.

“We will also advance cooperation on carbon credits, hydrogen, green finance, low-carbon technologies, and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS).

“On food security, I assured Prime Minister Wong that Thailand will be Singapore’s trusted partner. We will build on the rice trade agreement to supply 100,000 tons of Thai rice over 5 years and expand our cooperation to other products.

“Second, a resilient and integrated economy.

“We agreed to deepen bilateral trade and investment and welcome more Singaporean investment in semiconductor, digital and green economy, and logistics.

“We will work together on workforce development to support high-skill investment and Thailand’s OECD accession. We will also advance an open, rules-based trade agenda, including through the Future of Investment and Trade Partnership, which Thailand recently joined.

“We will also deepen cooperation on the digital economy, financial connectivity, and AI, both bilaterally and within ASEAN.

“Third, enhanced defense and security cooperation.

“We agreed to build upon our robust security cooperation by expanding cooperation in cybersecurity and defense industry, as well as on combatting online scams, bringing together relevant agencies, banks and tech companies.

“Fourth, closer strategic coordination on regional issues.

“Thailand fully supports Singapore's ASEAN Chairmanship next year. We will coordinate closely to ensure continuity between Singapore’s and Thailand’s Chairmanships.

“We had an extensive discussion about the geopolitical landscape. We agreed on the importance of stable and constructive relations among major powers, and the need for ASEAN to advance stronger regionalism, resilience and relevance.

“On Myanmar, we reaffirmed that ASEAN has an important role in supporting a peaceful and prosperous Myanmar. I briefed Prime Minister Wong on Thailand’s “calibrated re-engagement” in support of ASEAN’s effort. Thailand will work closely with Singapore and Myanmar to ensure further positive developments.

“On Thailand-Cambodia relations, I reaffirmed to Prime Minister Wong that Thailand remains committed to resolving our differences peacefully through existing bilateral mechanisms.

“To follow up on today's discussion, Thailand will host meetings between Foreign Ministers and Trade Ministers in the near future.

"I thank Prime Minister Wong for a substantive discussion. I look forward to visiting Singapore again for our next Leaders' Retreat.”
