The Rumavi Global Relocation Index 2026 ranks Thailand third globally for digital nomads (behind Malaysia and Portugal) and fourth for retirees (following Malaysia, Panama, and Portugal). These rankings were reported by regional media outlets, including Vietnam's VnExpress International and Malaysia's The Star. 

Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Persvivatana stated that the index evaluated 192 countries and territories, with Thailand achieving scores of 75.4 for digital nomads and 74.3 for retirees, placing it second in ASEAN for both categories.

She said that Thailand is recognized not only for tourism, but also for its great potential as a world-class destination for living, working, and long-term stays.

Thailand's strengths lie in its affordable cost of living (96.9 points), currency and banking system (91.8 points), and digital infrastructure (89.4 points), as well as the quality and affordability of healthcare access (78 points each). These factors meet the needs of both remote workers and retirees looking for a long-term stay.

The Deputy Government Spokesperson stated that the Government views these rankings as a significant economic opportunity. Foreign digital nomads and retirees tend to stay longer and spend continuously on accommodation, food, transport, healthcare, and other services. Attracting them to extend their stays will boost cash flow and distribute revenue to local entrepreneurs and communities year-round.

She said that the Government would build on these strengths by upgrading the digital economy, service sector, and healthcare system, while promoting Thailand as a premium, year-round destination. This marks a shift from focusing on “the number of tourists” to “higher spending and longer stays.” 

Furthermore, the rankings reflect areas where Thailand must urgently improve, including English proficiency, business opportunities, and the rule of law. The Government will use this data to enhance the country's competitiveness, turning Thailand into a long-term destination of choice for tourism, living, working, and investment.
