Launch of Nationwide Disaster Insurance Program Effective 1 October 2026

Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul presided over the launch of a nationwide disaster insurance program covering 30 million households. Effective from 1 October 2026, the program provides coverage against floods, windstorms, and earthquakes.

The Government aims for this scheme to serve as a key mechanism in offering relief and assistance to disaster victims, enabling them to recover and restore their livelihoods promptly. At the same time, it drives collective action toward tangible results, shifting the focus from post-disaster response to systematic disaster preparedness.

Residential property coverage is capped at a maximum of 100,000 baht per household, with each residence counted as a single unit regardless of the number of family members. Insurance claims will be processed based on damage assessments jointly evaluated by designated officers, committees, and relevant agencies to ensure that implementation complies with the criteria and achieves tangible results.

Coverage terms vary by disaster type.

Floods: Initial damage compensation is set at 10,000 baht, with additional coverage not exceeding 90,000 baht per household.

Windstorms: Initial damage compensation is set at 5,000 baht, with total combined coverage capped at 100,000 baht.

Earthquakes: Initial damage compensation is set at 5,000 baht, with total coverage capped at 100,000 baht.

All compensation payments remain subject to the terms, conditions, and damage assessments specified in the insurance policy.

Additionally, in cases where floodwaters surround an area for more than seven days – leaving residents unable to maintain their basic livelihoods – they will be eligible for a 10,000-baht compensation package. This reflects a 1,000-baht increase from the previous maximum of 9,000 baht stipulated by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, funded through an insurance procurement mechanism designed to protect the public.

The program also provides personal accident insurance covering loss of life, organ loss, and injuries – including death resulting from disaster impacts – with maximum coverage of up to two million baht per person.

Implemented on an annual basis, this program covers the period from October 2026 to October 2027, with insurance premiums subject to change based on the severity and situation of disasters.
