The Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Mr. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, will pay an official visit to Thailand as guest of the Government on 9-10 October 2026 at the invitation of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This will be the first official visit to Thailand by the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste in thirteen years since 2013, and the first since Timor-Leste became the eleventh member of ASEAN in October 2025. The visit would lay a foundation for the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2027.
On Friday, 9 October 2026, the Prime Minister will host an official welcome ceremony for the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste and his delegation at Government House, followed by a bilateral meeting. After that, the two prime ministers will witness the exchange of an agreement and hold a joint press conference. Prime Minister Anutin will then host an official luncheon in honor of the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste.
The discussion will cover a broad range of issues of common interest, such as development cooperation, defense and security cooperation including combatting transnational crimes, trade, investment, food security, energy, tourism, and people-to-people connectivity, as well as cooperation within the ASEAN framework.
Thailand and Timor-Leste have enjoyed close relations since Thailand's participation in peacekeeping in Timor-Leste in 1999, and Thailand was among the first group of countries to establish diplomatic relations with Timor-Leste.
Thailand has also been supporting the socio-economic development of Timor-Leste in areas that meet the needs of the local communities.
