Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Mathias Cormann has expressed support for Thailand to become a member of OECD. He is also confident that Thailand will be able to achieve membership by 2028.
Government Spokesperson Ekkapob Pianpises said that Prime Minister Anutin held talks with the OECD Secretary-General on 16 October on the occasion of his visit to Thailand for the 2026 IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.
The Prime Minister underscored Thailand’s strong commitment to seeking OECD membership in order to elevate national standards and build investor confidence across all sectors.
The OECD Secretary-General also expressed his impression of Thailand’s progress in the OECD accession process, saying that Thailand's OECD membership is not only a step forward for the country, but also a progress for the OECD in expanding its membership, allowing Thailand to play a constructive role in connecting the OECD with other regions.
The Government Spokesperson said that joining the OECD is, therefore, important in pushing Thailand's presence back onto the radar on the international stage, further boosting the confidence already placed in Thailand.
Previously, on 14 October, Ms. Traisuree Taisaranakul, Secretary-General to the Prime Minister, stated that, at the forum “Future-Ready Economy 2026,” an Official Side Event of the 2026 IMF-WBG Annual Meetings, the OECD Secretary-General emphasized that Thailand's accession to the OECD would not only benefit Thailand, but the OECD itself would also be stronger through the inclusion of Thailand's perspective and experience. The OECD wants Thailand's voice to play a role in international standard-setting arenas, reflecting Thailand's importance as a country capable of helping shape the future direction of economic cooperation.
