Kicking Off One-Million Rooftop Solar Program to Cut Electricity Bills

Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has presided over the launching of “People’s Solar Initiative” to cut energy costs, empower one million households with clean energy, and boost green income.

The program was launched at Santi Maitri Building, Government House, on 27 October 2026. The Prime Minister stated that promoting clean and alternative energy is one of the Government’s major policies and a key global issue. The objective is to strengthen Thailand’s energy security.

This household solar scheme is not only meant to install rooftop solar panels but to turn sunlight into savings, create opportunities for the people, shift the role of energy users to energy producers. It aims to enable one million households across the country to access electricity generation from solar energy.

In this regard, the Government will provide a 50,000-baht subsidy for each participating household, as it drives Thailand toward a sustainable clean energy society. In addition to helping reduce energy costs, people can sell excess electricity generated back into the national grid to generate extra household income. This makes the project not just an energy measure, but also an economic and social measure that helps increase income, reduce expenses, promote savings, and tangibly improve people's quality of life

Based on a preliminary estimate, the rooftop solar program will reduce the people's electricity costs by more than 24.5 billion baht a year. This amount will return to the local economic system to help stimulate employment and increase economic opportunities for local communities nationwide.

This project is the result of cooperation between the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, the Provincial Electricity Authority, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Energy, and the Ministry of Labor to ensure the maximum benefit for the public.

The implementation of clean energy policies is also part of Thailand's preparation for the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) membership, serving as a factor in the evaluation process. Achieving this goal will unlock numerous new opportunities for the country in terms of the economy, trade, and investment.
