Thai and Chinese governments have agreed to enhance cooperation in cracking down on cross-border crimes through an alert system and putting an end to online scams and other illicit activities, in order to protect their people and others who may be affected.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on 6 February 2025 paid a courtesy call on Chinese President Xi Jinping during her official visit to China from 5 to 8 February at the invitation of Mr. Li Qiang, Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn said that Thailand was ready to work with China and other neighboring countries to seriously suppress call center gang members who use Thailand as a transit point to other countries. Thailand also attaches great importance to ensuring safety for tourists visiting the country.
President Xi Jinping said that officials of both Thailand and China should continue to strengthen law enforcement and security cooperation at both sub-regional and regional levels in order to protect people's lives and property. He thanked the Thai government for its effective measures taken recently against criminal gangs targeting Chinese people by shutting off electrical power to stop illegal activities across the border from Thailand.
The Chinese President also called on the two countries to expand various cooperation areas, such as the digital economy, high-speed train development, cultural exchange, and the granting of scholarships. Activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Thai-Chinese diplomatic relations in 2025 were also raised for discussion to increase mutual understanding and amity between the two peoples.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn was pleased that China emphasized cooperation in human resource development, saying that Thailand aims to promote educational and cultural exchange programs, as well as “soft power” in order to empower people.
On this occasion, China congratulated Thailand on becoming a BRICS partner country. Both sides will support their roles in the international and regional levels, such as the United Nations, and ASEAN.
