Prime Minister Satisfied with Results of the 46th ASEAN Summit

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra stated that she was satisfied with the results of the 46th ASEAN Summit, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 26-27 May 2025. She believed that closer cooperation with various countries joining the summit and related meetings would bring greater economic stability to Thailand and benefit Thai people.

The Prime Minister on 27 May at 15.00 hr gave an interview to the Television Pool of Thailand on her participation in the 46th ASEAN Summit, when ASEAN leaders signed the document “Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future” to adopt the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which sets out directions for advancing the ASEAN Community in the next 20 years.

She said that the ASEAN - Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) - China Summit was held for the first time to promote economic cooperation and partnership among the three parties. In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that, at this summit, Prime Minister Paetongtarn underscored the importance of enhancing the mobility of goods, investment, services, and human capital, as well as of strengthening cooperation among businesses – especially micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. She also called for coordinated and targeted resource mobilization to drive sustainable economic growth, focusing on key sectors, such as logistics infrastructure, the halal industry, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, green finance, and clean energy.

In her interview, the Prime Minister said that Thailand had urged ASEAN to fully use the existing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), and pursue new FTAs with potential partners, as well as promoting food and energy security.

She also held discussions with leaders of several countries, namely the Philippines, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain, and President of the Asian Development Bank. She said that Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain are interested in investing in Thailand’s “Landbridge” project and are also ready to cooperate with Thailand in its potential food sectors.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister Paetongtarn had a bilateral discussion Mr. Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., President of the Republic of the Philippines on 26 May. Thailand is ready to export more agricultural products to the Philippines, while the Philippines invited more Thai companies to invest in the Philippines, especially in the fields of agriculture and energy. Both countries also agreed to increase cooperation in promoting tourism and combatting transnational crimes, particularly online scams and human trafficking.
