Thailand Presents Financial Contribution to Myanmar Affected by Recent Earthquake

Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow has presented Thailand's financial contribution to the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Center) to support humanitarian assistance to Myanmar following the recent earthquake.

The Thai government’s financial contribution of 14,900,000 baht, or about 460,000 USD, was presented to Mr. Lee Yam Ming, Executive Director of the AHA Center, at the AHA Center in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 6 October 2025. It aims to further mitigate the impact of the earthquake that struck Myanmar on 28 March 2025. At present, Myanmar still requires substantial support for its recovery from the disaster.

The Foreign Minister reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to working with the international community to ensure that humanitarian assistance in Myanmar is accessible, timely, effective, and non-discriminatory. Since the earthquake, Thailand has been consistent in extending assistance to Myanmar through various channels, including the delivery of royal relief items graciously bestowed by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Thailand, food donations from Thai private companies operating in Myanmar, and financial contributions through international organizations, such as the United Nations World Food Program.

On this occasion, the Executive Director of the AHA Center expressed gratitude and appreciation for Thailand’s constructive role in providing humanitarian support to the people of Myanmar, who continue to suffer from the impacts of natural disasters. He affirmed that the financial contribution would help expand and enable humanitarian assistance to reach more affected communities.

Preciously, on 5 October, Foreign Minister Sihasak, in his keynote address at the closing ceremony of the ASEAN for the Peoples Conference in Jakarta, reaffirmed Thailand’s readiness to play a constructive role in Myanmar’s peace process, including facilitating engagement among all stakeholders.

He said, “On Myanmar, I would like to add that we wish to see, and I think this is the goal of all ASEAN Member States, a peaceful, stable and unified Myanmar. We note the plans of the government in Naypyidaw to organize elections at the end of the year. In our view, an election is not an end in itself, but must be part and parcel of the broader peace process.

“Ultimately, lasting peace must come from dialogue and reconciliation, but it must be the decision of the Myanmar people themselves. If opportunities arise, Thailand, as a friend and neighbor, stands ready to facilitate peace talks among all parties.

“And if I may add a human perspective on peace and security in our region: Disputes must not be exploited for domestic political gains.”
