Thailand and India Strengthen Cooperation after the Elevation of Bilateral Ties to Strategic Partnership

Thailand and India are moving to further advance and strengthen cooperation after the elevation of bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership earlier this year.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow paid a working visit to India on 30 November-1 December 2025 to promote Thailand-India bilateral relations and discuss other issues, especially cooperation against transnational crimes, including online scams.

He held a bilateral meeting with Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India, in New Delhi, on 1 December. Both sides welcomed progress of Thailand-India cooperation in areas of mutual interest and benefit since the elevation of bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership during the visit to Thailand of the Prime Minister of India in April 2025.

These areas include political cooperation, bilateral and multilateral trade and investment, connectivity, startups, science, technology, innovation and space. The Foreign Minister requested India’s support for Thailand’s interest in joining BRICS during India's Chairmanship of BRICS in 2026.

Both sides also discussed foreign policies amidst current geopolitical challenges. Thailand reiterates its readiness to cooperate with India in various multilateral frameworks to strengthen regional integration. They also exchanged views on political issues, especially joint efforts to address emerging threats, including online scams and assistance to Indian victims.

In this regard, Thailand extended an invitation for India to join the International Conference on Global Partnerships to Combat Online Scams, and its interest in co-hosting the event, on 17-18 December 2025 in Bangkok, to further discuss international cooperation in this issue. Both sides also exchanged views on regional situations including the Thailand- Cambodia border tension and the situation in Myanmar.

Also, on 1 December, Mr. Sihasak held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Ajit Doval, National Security Advisor of India. They discussed ways to expand the Thailand-India Strategic Partnership and promote cooperation on security issues, especially maritime security and addressing the threat of online scams.

Previously, on 30 November, Mr. Sihasak had a discussion with India’s academia from various think tanks, including CSEP, India Foundation, and NatStrat. Both sides reaffirmed the close ties between Thailand and India, current geopolitical challenges, and complementary Thai and Indian foreign policies.

They exchanged opinions on fostering comprehensive cooperation, both bilaterally and in multilateral cooperation frameworks that Thailand and India are a part of, as well as connectivity between South Asia and Southeast Asia with Thailand and India as key players. Both sides also discussed security issues and joint efforts to address emerging threats, as well as exchanged views on the Thailand-Cambodia situation border and the situation in Myanmar.

Thailand and India have long been close historically, culturally, and religiously, which will commemorate 80 years of diplomatic relations in 2027. In 2024, India was Thailand’s 11th trading partner and the first in South Asia with trade value of 17.5 billion USD, which increased 8.8 per cent from 2023. India is also one of Thailand’s most important tourist markets.
