Thailand Strengthens Its International Cooperation on Combating Online Scams

Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Vijavat Isarabhakdi, during his recent visit to Washington, D.C., met U.S. prominent figures for talks on strengthening cooperation on combating online scams.

On 3 February 2026, Mr. Vijavat had a discussion with the Honorable Michael George DeSombre, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, at the U.S. Department of State. Both sides discussed advancing the Thai-U.S. alliance and strategic partnership, particularly on combating online scams and scam centers in Southeast Asia.

The Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs expressed appreciation for the U.S. support for Thailand’s efforts against online scams, including the recent offer in January 2026 of 10 million USD for law enforcement cooperation and the U.S. participation at the International Conference on Global Partnership against Online Scams, hosted by the Royal Thai Government in Bangkok in December 2025.

They also exchanged views on ways to further enhance cooperation between law enforcement agencies of both countries, including on intelligence sharing, identification of human trafficking victims, capacity building for relevant officials, and public-private partnership in order to address this common challenge of high priority for both countries.

On the same day, the Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs had a discussion with Congressman Warren Davidson (Republican–Ohio), a member of the U.S. House Financial Services Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Both sides discussed issues of common concern and exchanged views on preventing and combating online scams and scam centers in Southeast Asia, which is a shared priority for both Thailand and the U.S., as it has a significant impact on citizens of both countries and the region. They also expressed readiness to work together and exchanged views on ways to further strengthen cooperation in this regard.

Meanwhile, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Chettaphan Maksamphan stated that Thailand would participate in the second Global Fraud Summit, to be held on 16-17 March 2026 in Vienna. The summit aims to galvanize the political will of governments, international organizations, and the private sector to combat fraud, as well as strengthening international cooperation on law enforcement and fostering effective multi-stakeholder coordination to address and combat fraud at the global level.

Taking part in this Global Fraud Summit will reaffirm Thailand’s commitment to the fight against fraud and online scams, and it will also build on the outcomes of the International Conference on the Global Partnership against Online Scams, held on 17-18 December 2025 in Bangkok, which Thailand co-organized with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
