Thailand and France Strengthen Their Close Relations

Thailand and France have discussed ways to further strengthen their close and long-standing relations, particularly through continued exchange of high-level visits.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow on 23 February 2026 held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Jean-Noël Barrot, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Republic, during his visit to Paris.

They also explored avenues to enhance cooperation with a view to elevating bilateral relations to a “Strategic Partnership” on the occasion of the 170th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and France this year. The discussions also touched on various dimensions, including people-to-people exchanges and cultural cooperation.

Both sides exchanged views on geopolitical challenges and security issues in Southeast Asia, including matters of shared interests. The Foreign Minister further commended France’s neutral and constructive role in promoting international peace and stability, especially with regard to the Thai-Cambodian border situation.

He also updated on the situation in Myanmar as well as on efforts to combat scams in the region.

On 24 February, Foreign Minister Sihasak had a telephone conversation with Mrs. Kaja Kallas, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission (HR/VP) of the European Union.

Both sides exchanged views on international issues, including the Russia-Ukraine situation, and discussed developments of the Thailand-Cambodia border situation, reflecting Thailand’s consistent and strict compliance with the Joint Statement signed on 27 December 2025 between the two sides.
