Thailand and Malaysia have agreed to strengthen cooperation on border security, development of border areas, and connectivity to uplift people’s livelihood.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow paid a working visit to Malaysia on 6-7 September 2026. The visit provided an opportunity for the Deputy Prime Minister to follow up on the outcomes of the official visit of the Thai Prime Minister to Malaysia on 9-10 July 2026 as well as the roving cabinet meeting on 1 September 2026 in Songkhla.

During his visit to Malaysia, the Deputy Prime Minister attended a working lunch hosted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, and held a meeting with the Director-General of the National Security Council of Malaysia, on 7 September in Kuala Lumpur.

Both sides discussed the peace dialogue process in the southern border provinces of Thailand, with Malaysia as facilitator. They also underlined the importance of creating an environment that supports progress and development.

To ensure the continued advancement of bilateral cooperation, Thailand will host the 16th Joint Commission (JC) and the 7th Joint Development Strategy for Border Areas (JDS) toward the end of October 2026, to be co-chaired by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of both countries.

Both sides are committed to coordinating more closely under existing bilateral mechanisms, including closer intelligence sharing and coordination on the construction of security fences along the border to prevent transnational crime and other illegal activities.
