Striving for Peacebuilding in the Deep South through the Promotion of Soft Power

The Government has been generating employment and income for the well-being of local people in the southern border provinces. It is also striving to promote "soft power” as part of its efforts toward peacebuilding in the deep South.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek said that, in promoting soft power, local culture, such as food and community products, as well as tourist sites, have been introduced. It has become a unique selling point and attractive to both Thai and foreign tourists.

Ms. Rachada visited Narathiwat province recently, together with the Secretary-General of the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC), to listen to the views of local residents. She said that local people are ready to cooperate with the Government in promoting tourism and upgrading community products.

In the multicultural society of Narathiwat, Wat Chon Thara Singhe, or Wat Phithak Phaen Din Thai, in Tak Bai district, and Taloh-manoh Mosque, or Wadi Al-Husein Mosque, in Bacho district, are important historical sites. These old religious structures also serve as community centers.

Narathiwat province and SBPAC are joining hands in encouraging tourists to watch the sunrise and fog at Ko Yao in Tak Bai, especially in the cool season, and to hike Hala-Bala forest, which is dubbed the Amazon of ASEAN.

Su-ngai Kolok, the well-known border town of Narathiwat, welcomes a great number of Malaysian and Singaporean visitors coming for trade and tourism each year.

Ms. Rachada said that the Prime Minister had given encouragement to local people and officials and urged them to join forces in development and problem-solving in the deep South. The Prime Minister also stressed that the development of the southern border provinces must take into consideration public participation, the well-being of the people, and their peace and happiness.
