Restoring Phiphitphakdi Palace in Sai Buri District of Pattani

Aware of the historical and architectural importance of Phiphitphakdi Palace in Sai Buri district, the southern border province of Pattani, a women's group in Sai Buri has mobilized efforts to restore this century-old palace as cultural heritage for generations to come.

Located opposite Sai Buri Palace in Taluban subdistrict, Phiphitphakdi Palace is a major archeological site of Sai Buri. Originally, it was the residence of Phra Phiphitphakdi (Tunku Mukda Abdulbut), the eldest son of Phra Phiphitsenamat, the ruler of Yaring city. It was said that Phra Phiphitphakdi fell in love with a niece of Phraya Sai Buri, the ruler of Sai Buri city, but his father did not agree with him, as he was not on good terms with the ruler of Sai Buri at that time.

However, Phra Phiphitphakdi exerted his greatest efforts until he was able to marry the niece of Phraya Sai Buri. Then he built Phiphitphakdi Palace, near the palace of Phraya Sai Buri, as his residence to live with his wife. In fact, Phiphitphakdi Palace was not originally a palace, but a home for the couple. It has been called palace in honor of the ruler of Sai Buri, who lived nearby.

Phiphitphakdi Palace is a two-story teak building in a combination of Javanese and Western styles of architecture. It features a balcony with curved walls in the Western style, as well as balustrades and vents with Javanese-style floral motifs made by a Chinese architect from Bangkok and local residents.

This unique building had been left unattended for almost 40 years, and it was sold to an individual by the heir of the owner. The women's group, known as "Muslimah Sai Buri,” mobilized a fund of 10.5 million baht to buy the building and restore it as the source of historical knowledge and architectural heritage for the present and future generations.

Phiphitphakdi Palace also reflects the glory of Sai Buri, which served as a port in the past and had trade contact with many foreigners, especially European people. It has become one of the many places of interest in Pattani province.
