The National Assembly has launched a project for the development of the southern border province of Narathiwat in honor of His Majesty the King on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty's sixth-cycle (72nd) birthday anniversary this year.
Mr. Wanmuhamadnoor Matha, President of the National Assembly and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, on 14 June 2024 presided over the launching of this project at Narathat Beach in Mueang District, Natathiwat Province.
The project started with easing the problem of high electricity rates faced by local residents in the Narathat Beach area. Many people there had no house registration, which meant that they could not apply for an electricity meter installation. Since they needed to get their home connected to an electricity supply from other people who have electricity meters, they were charged high power rates from them.
Having learned about this problem, the National Assembly invited relevant agencies to discuss ways to ease the hardships of the local residents. The local municipality agreed to issue temporary house registrations to the affected residents, so that they could submit applications for an electricity meter installation.
In this regard, the Provincial Electricity Authority has already installed electricity meters for more than 300 families. The installation will continue to cover the remaining 207 families.
On 15 June 2024, the National Assembly organized a seminar to discuss the problem of land rights for people living for more than 50 years in the Si Po Waterfall National Park in Ra-ngae District. This problem involves complicated legal matters. The Narathiwat Governor, the Royal Forest Department, and the National Park, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation Department were urged to help people affected by this predicament.
Narathiwat Province was cited as a pilot area for the National Assembly to inspect in order to ease the difficulties faced by local people. It will be used as a model for the National Assembly to follow as they help people in other parts of the country, as well.
This small province boasts beautiful scenery with expansive mountainous areas and fertile forests. Its people have a vision to develop Narathiwat as one of the country’s most livable provinces, moving toward lasting peace and economic prosperity.
