Launching Tourism Promotion Project in the Southern Border Province of Narathiwat

The southern border province of Narathiwat has launched a project to introduce “Yakang Floating Market,” its new tourist attraction located in Bang Nak Subdistrict, Mueang District.

Narathiwat Governor Trakul Thotham on 29 June 2024 presided over the launching of the tourism promotion project, with the participation of representatives from local organizations and a number of tourists. The Narathiwat Provincial Office of Tourism and Sports organized several activities as part of the project to introduce the Yakang floating market, such as cultural performances, a water-borne procession, a rowing competition, and a food fair.

It aims to upgrade and strengthen Yakang community tourism, create community networks to enhance sustainable tourism, and make this community in the deep South better known. Tourism management by local communities is also emphasized.

The Yakang floating market is part of a community market found in an area along the Yakang Canal. It has received a positive response from both Thai and foreign visitors, especially those from Malaysia.

Yakang is an old community that is now ready to serve as a tourist attraction. Often referred to as a “dessert community,” it is well-known for desserts cooked in the traditional style. Some of these desserts from this Muslim community have also been exported to Malaysia.

One of Thailand’s southernmost provinces sharing a border with Kelantan in Malaysia, Narathiwat welcomes a great number of Malaysian and Singaporean visitors coming for trade and tourism each year.

It is expected that the construction of the second bridge connecting Su-ngai Kolok in Narathiwat and Kelantan in Malaysia will start in April 2025. The Narathiwat Governor hopes that the second bridge will help promote tourism and trade between the two countries.
