Thailand's Cabinet Reshuffle Welcomes Six New Ministers

The Royal Gazette published details of a Cabinet reshuffle on Sunday (April 28), introducing six new ministers and noting the exit of four incumbents. The changes, authorized by His Majesty the King, were countersigned by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin the previous day.

In this latest Cabinet reshuffle, Prime Minister Srettha has appointed Pichai Chunhavajira as the new Finance Minister, stepping down from the role himself. Pichai, previously the chairman of the Stock Exchange of Thailand’s board, will also serve as Deputy Prime Minister. Despite expectations, Srettha chose to retain Sutin Klungsang as the Defense Minister, foregoing the defense portfolio for himself.

In other significant changes, Dr Cholnan Srikaew was replaced as Public Health Minister by Somsak Thepsutin, who has also been promoted to Deputy Prime Minister. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara was relieved of his duties as Deputy Prime Minister during the reshuffle.

The reshuffle also saw Suriya Jungrungreangkit, the Transport Minister, taking on additional duties as Deputy Prime Minister. Changes in the Ministry of Culture and the Prime Minister’s Office saw Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol and Jakkapong Saengmanee assume new roles as Culture Minister and Prime Minister’s Office Minister, respectively.

The reshuffle resulted in the removal of several figures, including Dr Cholnan Srikaew, Puangpetch Chunlaiad, Chaiya Promma, and Anucha Nakasai, from their previous positions.

The new Cabinet also introduces several fresh faces under different political quotas. Pichai Chunhavajira leads the new entries under the Pheu Thai quota, along with Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul, and PM’s Office Ministers Jiraporn Sindhuprai and Pichit Chuenban. Atakorn Sirilatthayakon and Suchart Chomklin have been appointed as Deputy Agriculture Minister and Deputy Commerce Minister, representing Palang Pracharath and United Thai Nation Parties, respectively.
