Thailand is set to implement its Equal Marriage Law on January 23, 2025, following the Cabinet’s approval of key amendments to the Family Registration Act. These changes include consolidating registration forms, adopting gender-inclusive language, and streamlining processes for overseas registrations through digital systems. The updates are designed to ensure equal legal rights for all couples, regardless of gender, and reflect progress in achieving social equality.

The Ministry of Interior, led by Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, has completed preparations for the law’s implementation, including personnel training, system updates, and regulatory adjustments. To celebrate the special milestone, the ministry will host the “Gong of Triumph for All Loves Across 878 Districts” ceremony in Kathu district, Phuket. The event will include same-sex marriage registrations, cultural performances, and legal clinics to educate the public about the new law.

Under the law, couples must meet certain eligibility criteria to register their marriage. Both parties must be at least 18 years old, free of prior marital ties, and not share a biological or adoptive family relationship. Women who are widowed or divorced must wait 310 days before remarrying unless specific conditions are met. Documents such as national ID cards, passports, and marital status certificates will be required, along with two witnesses aged 18 or older.

Marriage registrations can take place at district offices, municipal offices, or Thai embassies and consulates. On-site registrations will be free, while off-site registrations will cost 200 baht. Spouses will gain equal rights and responsibilities, including mutual support obligations, joint management of assets, inheritance rights, and eligibility for tax deductions and survivor benefits.

The Equal Marriage Law places Thailand at the forefront of gender equality in Asia, supporting its role as a progressive leader in social justice. The legislative changes are expected to contribute to a more inclusive society while promoting equality for all couples.
