Thailand advances UNESCO bid for Wat Phra Mahathat in Nakhon Si Thammarat

Thailand has moved forward with its bid to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, following Cabinet approval to submit the final nomination dossier. If successful, the temple would become Thailand’s sixth cultural World Heritage Site and the first in the southern region. The Ministry of Culture, led by Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, is promoting cultural heritage as a driver for economic sustainability, with efforts focused on enhancing tourism infrastructure and expanding heritage recognition at local, national, and international levels.
The nomination process follows a structured evaluation timeline, beginning with the dossier submission by January 31, 2025. UNESCO will conduct assessments, on-site evaluations, and expert reviews over the next year, with a final decision expected in mid-2026. If inscribed, Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan temple would contribute to Thailand’s cultural tourism sector and strengthen its global standing in heritage conservation.
The temple, which has been on Thailand’s Tentative List for UNESCO consideration since 2012, meets two key World Heritage criteria. It represents a long history of cultural and artistic exchange across South and Southeast Asia, influenced by traditions from India, Java, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. Additionally, it remains a center for religious and cultural practices, hosting annual Buddhist ceremonies and performances that reflect the region’s spiritual heritage.
Thailand currently has five designated cultural World Heritage Sites, including the Historic City of Ayutthaya and the Ban Chiang Archaeological Site. Several other locations, such as Phanom Rung and Phra That Phanom, remain on the country’s tentative list for future nominations. The government is working to secure at least one cultural World Heritage Site in each region while maintaining responsible tourism practices and long-term preservation efforts.
