Thai Ingredients Target Global Kitchens

Thailand intensifies efforts to expand its food exports, aiming to make Thai ingredients a global household staple.

The government’s "Kitchen of the World" initiative focuses on building the global presence of Thai food, not just through restaurants but also by integrating Thai ingredients into everyday meals worldwide. The vision starts at the source—supporting agriculture, refining food logistics, developing cooking methods, and training chefs who will present Thai cuisine internationally.

A key part of this mission involved visiting Wing Yip, one of the largest Asian food importers and supermarket chains in the United Kingdom. The company imports more than 1,000 Thai products annually, totaling around 500 million baht in value. These include canned goods, condiments, frozen foods, beverages, snacks, and jasmine rice.

Discussions focused on increasing market share for Thai products, improving product quality, and ensuring longer shelf life. A special emphasis was placed on dried Thai fruits, which are popular among foreign consumers but still underrepresented in overseas markets. With surplus fruits in provinces like Chanthaburi, Thailand has an opportunity to add value through processing and export, turning potential waste into income for farmers year-round.

The government is urging the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, and the Ministry of Industry to develop strategic pathways for quality control and preservation to ensure Thailand’s agricultural products meet global demand.

This marks the beginning of a broader mission to put Thai ingredients on supermarket shelves and into kitchens across the world, reinforcing Thai food’s reputation not only as cuisine but also as an exportable soft power asset.
