Thailand's Pheu Thai Party Seeks Royal Approval to Dissolve House

The Pheu Thai Party has confirmed that Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has submitted a request for royal approval to dissolve the House of Representatives, citing the inability to move forward under current political conditions. The party’s secretary-general, Sorawong Thienthong, said the decision was made in response to the People’s Party’s endorsement of Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul as prime minister, while refusing to join any resulting coalition.

Sorawong said a government formed without the People’s Party would lack the numbers to function effectively, with only about 130 MPs. In his view, the situation no longer allows for a stable or credible administration to be formed under the current arrangement.

He added that Pheu Thai remains ready to nominate Chaikasem Nitisiri as its candidate for prime minister once the House Speaker places the matter on the agenda. The party is continuing with its parliamentary preparations while awaiting the outcome of the dissolution process.

On legal concerns surrounding the dissolution, Sorawong said Pheu Thai’s legal team has reviewed the matter and maintains that the move is within the bounds of the law. He stated that additional details will be announced directly by the acting premier.
