The Second Army Area has issued a clarification following reports of a suspected landmine discovered at the Ta Miang Subdistrict Administrative Organization sports field in Surin Province. The incident drew public attention after images of the object circulated widely on social media.
Military personnel from the Suranaree Task Force and Task Force 2, working alongside an explosive ordnance disposal team and other agencies, inspected the site and identified the object as a Type 72 anti-personnel landmine. Authorities said the device was old and in a deteriorated condition, showing clear signs of long-term exposure to the elements.
According to officials, the sports field is located well away from both the Thai-Cambodian border and previously identified landmine-contaminated areas. Preliminary findings suggest the device may have been transported from another location and abandoned at the site. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding its presence there.
The landmine has since been safely removed and handled in accordance with established explosive ordnance disposal procedures. The Second Army Area also reminded the public that landmine survey and clearance operations continue in some border areas of Surin province, urging anyone who encounters a suspicious object to immediately notify military personnel, police, or local authorities.
