Their Majesties the King and Queen on 29 June 2026 met President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron and his spouse, Madame Brigitte Macron, at the Élysée Palace in Paris, following an official welcoming ceremony held at the Hôtel National des Invalides.

On this occasion, the Government of the French Republic displayed significant historical documents relating to Thai-French relations, including (1) the Golden Letter sent by King Mongkut (Rama IV) to Emperor Napoleon III in 1861, (2) the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation between Siam and France signed in 1856, and (3) the Siamese Instrument of Ratification for the 1856 Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation between Siam and France.

In the evening, Their Majesties the King and Queen, together with Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, proceeded to the Élysée Palace, where the President of the French Republic bestowed His Majesty the King the Grand-Croix of the Légion d'Honneur, and Her Majesty the Queen the Grand-Croix of the Ordre national du Mérite.

They attended a state banquet at the ballroom, hosted by the President of the French Republic and Madame Macron. President Macron delivered remarks welcoming Their Majesties on the occasion of the State Visit to the French Republic, scheduled for 28 June-2 July. He noted that the visit would further strengthen the longstanding ties between the two nations.

His Majesty the King then delivered the following reply:

Mr. President,

The Queen and I are delighted to pay this State Visit to the French Republic. We sincerely thank you, Mr. President, the Government, and the people of France for your warm welcome, and for the kindness and respect you have consistently shown to my family as well as to the people of Thailand.

The Kingdom of Thailand and the French Republic have enjoyed a longstanding and close relationship, working together in many fields, including the economy, security, education, culture, and environmental conservation, for the benefit of the peoples of both countries. Last year marked the 340th anniversary of Thai-French relations, and this year marks the 170th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two nations. These milestones reaffirm the enduring bonds that have steadily grown stronger, both at the official level between our countries and at the personal level between our peoples.

I am therefore confident that the relationship between our two countries will continue to flourish in the years ahead, and that we will expand our cooperation across an even broader range of fields and at every level, for the prosperity and security of our peoples. This is especially important at a time when the world is undergoing rapid change and nations have an ever greater need to support one another in a spirit of friendship and goodwill.

I wish Your Excellency, Madame Macron, and the people of France every happiness and success. May the friendship between our two countries continue to prosper and endure.

Following His Majesty’s remarks, President Macron proposed a toast in honor of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua, Her Majesty Queen Suthida, and Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari.

His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua (Rama X) and Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana are paying a State Visit to the French Republic from 28 June to 2 July 2026 at the invitation of Mr. Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic.

According to the Bureau of the Royal Household, this visit constitutes the third occasion in history on which a reigning Thai monarch has paid a state visit to the French Republic. The first was made by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1897, and the second by King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great (Rama (IX) in 1960.

This ongoing third State Visit is especially significant, as it takes place 340 years after the first contact between Thailand and France made in 1685, and marks at the same time the 170th anniversary of the establishment of Thailand-France diplomatic relations in 1856. This State Visit thus serves to strengthen and build on the enduring, steadfast friendship between the two countries.

On this occasion, Their Majesties will also visit the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris to view the exhibition "La Mode en Majesté: Royal Thai Dress From Tradition to Modernity." Organized under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, the exhibition highlights the evolution of Royal Thai Court attire and its representation on the global stage.

The longstanding relations between Thailand and France have remained strong and stable for over three centuries. These ties date back to 1685, when a French diplomatic mission led by Chevalier de Chaumont, under King Louis XIV, visited the Siamese court of King Narai the Great during the Ayutthaya period. The signing of their Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation took place in 1856.

Both sides recently agreed to implement the “Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership 2026-2028,” an important step toward elevating bilateral relations to a strategic partnership.

The State Visit of Their Majesties the King and Queen of Thailand to France marks another milestone in the longstanding and robust relationship between Thailand and France.
