Beginning of the Celebrations of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorns 60th Birthday

Thailand is starting year-long celebrations to mark the auspicious occasion of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorns fifth cycle, or 60th, birthday anniversary.

For Thai people, the fifth cycle is an important milestone of life and a special celebration is usually arranged on this occasion.

As a tribute to the Princess, the Thai government has set the period from 1 January to 31 December 2015 as the period for the celebrations of Her Royal Highness 60th birthday. It acknowledged the title in English for the celebrations: "The Celebrations on the Auspicious Occasion of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorns 5th Cycle Birthday Anniversary 2nd April 2015.

Various agencies and organizations, as well as the general public, have been invited to display on their offices and houses a purple flag with the ceremonial emblem on the celebrations from 1 January to 31 December 2015. Purple is the color of Saturday, the birthday of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The public have also been invited to wear purple shirts, with the ceremonial emblem, as an expression of love and respect for Her Royal Highness.

Her Royal Highness was born on 2 April 1955. She is the third child and second daughter of Their Majesties the King and Queen and is the first of the royal children to attend a local institution of higher learning. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Chulalongkorn University, where she majored in history. Her Royal Highness obtained Masters degrees from Chulalongkorn University, majoring in Pali-Sanskrit, and from Silpakorn University, majoring in Oriental Epigraphy. She also holds a doctorate in Development Education from Srinakharinwirot University.

Her Royal Highness is deeply loved by the Thai people for her kindness, sincerity, simplicity, and concern for others. As a scholar, she has been studying and acquiring new knowledge all the time. She is proficient in several foreign languages, especially English, French, Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese, and Cambodian.

Whenever and wherever she travels, she always takes a notebook and a pen to jot down all the information she gets. Her Royal Highness started learning at a tender age, from watching Their Majesties at work, so she has had hand-on experience in learning of the sufferings of Thai people in all walks of life. She also gets to observe Their Majesties way of working while following them everywhere they go to check on their projects.

Many of her activities have been devoted to the poor and the underprivileged. Her perseverance and efforts to improve Thai peoples quality of life is recognized internationally, as evidenced by her being awarded with the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Services in 1991. She is the only Princess in the world to receive this honor.
