Sufficiency Economy Philosophy Adopted by Participants in the Inspire Project

1 January 2018 (Readers 1484)

Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha has observed the training in the application of the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy by convicts under the "Inspire Project, known in Thai as the "Kamlangjai Project.
Her Royal Highness on 28 December 2017 visited the Doi Hang temporary prison in Mueang district, Chiang Rai province. There are 166 convicts at this prison and 45 of them have joined the Inspire Project, which was initiated by Her Royal Highness and founded in 2006.
The project stemmed from the Princesss intention to improve the legal affairs and justice process. With a particular interest in the lives of female inmates, Her Royal Highness concentrated initially on pregnant inmates and the children belonging to female detainees. The Inspire Project aims to extend help and give encouragement to those who made mistakes in their lives and were brought to justice, and those groups of people who lack better prospects and need help to return to society as decent citizens.
It offers a helping hand to those in need of opportunities in Thai society by carrying out activities that support government agencies without overlapping government programs. The target groups consist of female detainees, detainees babies, juvenile delinquents, and other groups of needy persons who are part of the justice process.
In response to the wishes of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha, the Department of Corrections has disseminated knowledge about the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy to convicts, so that they can apply it to their occupations after they complete their jail term.
Under the Inspire Project, a number of inmates have been trained in the "New Theory, as well as other occupations. In the beginning, when His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej introduced the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, many people had difficulty understanding precisely what it meant. But an earlier application of its principles can be found in the "New Theory," an approach His Majesty devised to advance agricultural practices and the management of small agricultural areas.
The New Theory is an example of how the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy can generate practical benefits. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej unveiled the theory with a model of a self-reliant family farm, and the model has proved to be reliable.
