The Cabinet, during its meeting on 28 May 2019, approved the construction of the Ban Phai Maha Sarakham Roi Et Mukdahan - Nakhon Phanom double-track rail project, to be carried out by the State Railway of Thailand.

The project covers a length of 355 kilometers, with a construction period of eight years (2018-2025 fiscal years). It involves a budget of about 66.85 billion baht. E-bidding will be adopted for the project.

This new double-track rail project is part of the Upper East-West Economic Corridor, which will link with the railway network leading to the Laem Chabang Port in the East and connect with the border goods transport center project in the northeastern province of Nakhon Phanom.

From Nakhon Phanom, the rail project may also link with Lao PDR and Hanoi in Vietnam. To the west, from Mae Sot, it may link with the Port of Yangon and the Port of Moulmein in Myanmar in the future.

The Ban Phai Maha Sarakham Roi Et Mukdahan - Nakhon Phanom route passes through 70 subdistricts, 19 districts, and six provinces, namely Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Roi-Et, Yasothon, Mukdahan, and Nakhon Phanom.

Along this route, there will be 30 new stations, one junction, three container depots, and three container yards. A maintenance plant will be constructed at Phu Lek Station in Khon Kaen for light and moderate repairs. As for heavy repair work it will be sent to the locomotive depot in Uttaradit.
