5 September 2019 (Readers 887)

The Government invites the public to attend an audience with Their Majesties the King and Queen, who will travel in a Royal Barge Procession on the occasion of the Coronation of His Majesty the King.

The Royal Barge Procession will be held on Thursday, 24 October 2019, marking the conclusion of the Royal Coronation Ceremony, which took place on 4-6 May 2019.

Since ancient times, Thai kings have traveled not only by land but also by boat. When they traveled by boat on special occasions, such as the Royal Coronation Ceremony, a magnificent royal barge procession would be formed.

The Royal Thai Navy is preparing the Royal Barge Procession on the Chao Phraya River and is also providing training for more than 2,000 oarsmen in barge rowing skills.

The upcoming Royal Barge Procession will start at the Wasukri pier and end at the Ratchaworadit pier on the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, for a distance of 3.4 kilometers. It will comprise 52 barges, manned by 2,200 crew members.

The ceremonial water-borne procession is a unique cultural heritage that was passed on to the present generation from Thai ancestors. It will be the first Royal Barge Procession in the present reign. There is no such tradition in other countries.

This rarely-held event is recognized as one of the worlds finest spectacles, in which all the grandeur and splendor of Thai arts and culture are presented for everyone to see.
