A Nationwide Curfew Imposed on 3 April Onwards to Effectively Deal with COVID-19

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha on 2 April 2020 announced a nationwide curfew, to be effective from 22.00 to 04.00 hr, starting from 3 April 2020 onwards until further notice.

The curfew is in line with Section 9 of the Emergency Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations B.E. 2548 (2005) in order to end the COVID-19 situation as soon as possible.

Under the curfew, people are prohibited from staying outside their premises, from 22.00 to 04.00 hr, except in case of necessity and those who must perform their duties in medical services, banking, transportation of consumer goods, agricultural products, medicines, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, newspapers, fuel, parcels, and export and import items, the movements of people for quarantine, the travel of people on duty at nighttime, and the travel of people to and from the airport, with documents on the necessity of travel and on their products, as well as their measures in disease prevention. The exception also involves personnel operating in accordance with official orders and announcements and persons who are given permission from responsible officials because of their necessity.

Violators will be subject to a jail term of up to two years and a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both, in accordance with Section 18 of the Emergency Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations B.E. 2548 (2005).

In case that the movements of people on travel out of the country cannot be conducted, the provincial communicable disease committees or the Bangkok communicable disease committee will have to arrange places of detention or quarantine for them, in order to prevent the disease from spreading, in accordance with the set conditions and limited time.
