3 May 2020 (Readers 1810)

The day of 4 May marks the coronation anniversary of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua, the tenth monarch of the Royal House of Chakri.

His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua is the only son, the second of four children, of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. He ascended the throne as King Rama X, succeeding his royal father, who passed away on 13 October 2016.

The coronation of His Majesty King Rama X was performed on 4-6 May 2019, but the most important event of the three-day ceremony was held on 4 May. Therefore, 4 May was designated Coronation Day and a public holiday.

His Majesty King Rama X presented the First Royal Command on 4 May 2019:
We shall treasure, preserve, and build on our heritage and shall reign in righteousness for the great enduring good of the people. On this occasion, he delivered a royal address encouraging everyone in the grand assembly, as well as all Thai people, to join him in showing their intention to perform their duties by upholding national interests, progress, and stability, as well as achieving the happiness of the people as the ultimate goal.

Prior to the royal coronation ceremony, His Majesty gave a royal command on 1 May 2019 installing General Suthida Vajiralongkorn Na Ayudhya, the royal consort, as Queen Suthida, who was later named Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana.

As the Government has been implementing measures to effectively control the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the royal ceremony and other activities to celebrate the royal coronation anniversary will not be arranged this year. Businesses and organizations may display a portrait of His Majesty the King, together with floral offerings and a well-wishers book, on their premises to commemorate this occasion.

On 1 May 2020, Mr. Disthat Hotrakit, Secretary-General to the Prime Minister, presided over a ceremony to offer best wishes to His Majesty the King on the occasion of Coronation Day, 4 May. The ceremony took place at Santi Maitri Building, Government House, with the participation of senior officials.

The Prime Minister, the President of the of the National Assembly, and the President of the Supreme Court also delivered congratulatory statements on behalf of the Cabinet, government officials, and the general public, the legislature, and the judiciary, respectively. The statements were pre-recorded and will be broadcast on all television channels on Monday, 4 May, during the presentation of court news.
