Phu Khiao Wildlife Reserve – Nam Nao National Park and Phu Kradueng National Park in Thailand have been listed as ASEAN Heritage Parks in the 34th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Envirionment in Bogor, Indonesia, according to Thalearngsak Petchsuwan, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
In Phu Khiao Wildlife Reserve – Nam Nao National Park, the 56th ASEAN Heritage Park, located in Phetchabun Province, 96.65 percent of the area is forest. The site has a great variety of geological and cave features where rare plants and animals are found, such as marbled cats, chamois, and clouded leopards.
Meanwhile, Phu Kradueng National Park, the 57th ASEAN Heritage Park, located in the Phetchabun mountain range, Loei Province, is covered with more than 98 percent of natural forests and is a habitat for rare plant species such as white and red roses, as well as endangered and protected wildlife such as serow, Java pangolins, yellow turtle, and white-handed gibbons.
Previously, seven sites in Thailand were certified as ASEAN Heritage Parks, namely Khao Yai National Park, Tarutao National Park, Mu Koh Surin – Mu Kho Similan – Ao Phangnga National Parks, Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex, Hat Chao Mai National Park – Mu Koh Libong Non-hunting Area, Mu Koh Ang Thong National Park, and Kao Sok National Park.
