29 August 2023 Taworn Thunjai, the deputy director-general of the Department of Fisheries, revealed that the organization has increased its focus on random inspections of seafood imported from Japan as a result of the release of radioactive water treated from the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean on 24 August. Products imported from areas with a higher risk of contamination, such as Tokyo, Fukushima, Chiba, Gunma, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Miyagi, Nigata, Nakano, and Saitama, are the focus of this study. The department's cooperation with the Office of Atoms for Peace and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI) has enabled the increased inspection effort. To prevent items tainted with harmful amounts of radioactive materials from being imported, the agencies are working together to measure the radiation levels in imported seafood products.
