The Ad Hoc Center for Thailand-Cambodia Border Situation is planning to construct a 16-kilometer fence in the area of the boundary markers 50-51 in Sa Kaeo Province to enhance public safety and prevent Cambodia’s intrusion.
Government Spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub said that the Ad Hoc Center, during its meeting on 3 September, approved the construction of the border fence. It also heard a report that the Interim Observer Team (IOT) had visited Chanthaburi and Trat provinces on 2 September to observe security operations, mine clearance, and local people’s well-being.
Results of the visit reveal Thailand’s straightforward and transparent operations, and its commitment to cooperation for the maintenance of regional peace.
Thailand is also preparing for the second Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, to be held in Cambodia’s Koh Kong Province from 7 to 10 September. It will continue to launch proactive operations to provide factual information regarding landmines to high-ranking officials at the United Nations, members of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and state parties to the Ottawa Convention.
According to Mr. Jirayu, as of the morning of 4 September, the Thai-Cambodian border situation remains stable, with no report of any clash or violence. Military forces continue to closely monitor the situation and stay vigilant at all times.
