Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother performed all royal functions and activities in all circumstances, including accompanying King Rama IX to pay state visits to many countries from 1959 to 1967 to promote friendly relations with the international community.
King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit at that time gave importance to overseas visits, with a view to establishing mutual acquaintances and friendly relations first. They began their overseas trips by visiting countries in this region, namely Vietnam, the Republic of Indonesia, and the then Union of Burma. Afterward, they paid state visits to the United States of America, European countries, Australia, and Asian nations.
The lengthy overseas trips were very important in Thai history, and both the King and the Queen were given the highest honors worthy of royalty. Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, in particular, showcased the image of a “modern Thai lady” standing by her husband’s side and travelling to various countries, ready to work for the country. Everywhere the royal couple went, the Queen was greatly admired and earned the respect of people, as well.
More importantly, the state visits provided Thailand with opportunities to strengthen friendly international relations following World War II. They would also show to the world that Thailand was progressing at a rate comparable to Western nations, while Thai people took pride in their culture and national identity, as well.
The prominent features of Thai cultural identity were shown in the charming manners of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, who had a modern educational background and possessed a gentle yet sophisticated nature. The traditional style of dresses worn during Her Majesty’s state visits became the prototypes of Thai national costume for women.
Her Majesty entrusted Pierre Balmain, a French designer who was in Bangkok at that time, with designing her costumes by blending traditional Thai clothing with Western styles. That was the starting point for the development of royal-inspired Thai costumes, later referred to as “Chud Thai Phra Ratchaniyom.”
It is clear to see that Her Majesty Queen Sirikit played a significant role in endearing the Thai monarchy and Thailand to the international community.
