The United Nations Education, Science, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has honored His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great (Rama IX) and Queen Rambhai Barni, the Queen of King Prajadhipok (Rama VII), by including their anniversaries in the organization's “Anniversaries Celebration” program for 2026–2027.
The decision was made during the 43rd General Conference of UNESCO in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on 13 November 2025.
The recognition marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great, in recognition of his dedication to the welfare of the Thai people through over 4,000 royal development projects.
Recognized as the “Development King,” King Rama IX received numerous honors and acknowledgments from various United Nations bodies for his contributions to human development and his "Sufficiency Economy Philosophy,” which has guided Thailand toward the goal of sustainable development. Thailand had submitted the name of King Rama IX for UNESCO’s list of Eminent Personalities of the World to commemorate the 100th birthday anniversary of His Majesty in 2027.
The centennial commemoration of Queen Rambhai Barni’s legacy honors her contributions to education, social sustainable development, and gender equality. The Queen played a visible public role during a time when few women held leadership positions. Fluent in English and French, she traveled widely, engaged in intercultural dialogue, and supported the Free Thai Movement during WW II. After King Prajadhipok’s death, the Queen returned to Thailand and led a quiet life, developing a sustainable farm in Chanthaburi, promoting agricultural innovation and community empowerment. Her legacy continues to inspire efforts in education, sustainability, and women’s leadership.
Representing Thailand at the 43rd General Conference of UNESCO, Permanent Secretary for Education Suthep Kaengsanthia stated that Thai people were very pleased by the UNESCO decision, which underlined the great contributions of both King Rama IX and Queen Rambhai Barni, whose dedication brought happiness to the people and benefited humanity, aligning with UNESCO’s principles.
